Nurturing Discipline & Respect

In our dojo, respect isn’t just a word; it’s a way of life. We nurture an environment where disciplined training is honoured without deliberate harm. This minimises injuries and forges a community of martial artists supporting one another’s growth.

Our Kempo Karate Classes

If you would like to improve your fitness, confidence, strength, flexibility, and inner calm, as well as be able to defend yourself, then Kempo Karate is a great place to start. Please see the classes page for more details on how to join.

Self-defence is embodied within the disciplines of Karate and Kung Fu. Due to their proven efficacy, these well-established martial arts have stood the test of time. Over the years, numerous other self-defence styles have emerged and subsequently faded; however, Karate and Kung Fu’s enduring success attests to their value and effectiveness in self-protection.

Beginner Classes

If you are interested in having a go and seeing if Kempo Karate is for you, you can try the Intro Class. They are once a week for 45 minutes over 5 weeks. It’s free, and by the end, you will have learnt enough for your white belt!

Teen Classes

Teen classes are perfect for the younger ones to refine beginner techniques or continue their path through the belts. As teens progress in learning their martial arts and become skilful at the techniques, they will experience the fun of testing their powers and abilities.

Adult Classes

In our adult classes, you’ll train as hard as you can, so you will get great benefits for your body and mind through that training. Live life with less fear and feel more confident, knowing that should someone try to intimidate you or worse, you have options.

About Kempo Karate

Kempo means “The Way of the Fist” and is an art form that took its current shape in Okinawa, but it has roots stretching back through China to the Shaolin Temple and beyond. Kempo should be seen as part of the Karate family of arts; in fact, Kempo was the art form that the founder of modern Karate studied and modified to create Kara-Te (Empty-Hand).

Your Questions Answered

Who can start Kempo Karate?

Anyone can start Karate lessons at any time or place in their life. No one is ever too old, small, big, timid, or weak to start Kempo Karate (or any other traditional martial arts). No matter your situation, you’ll get a lot out of progress from training and learning to defend yourself. Thousands of New Zealanders have trained in Kempo (there are many different schools), and almost none have looked like peak athletes.

Will I get punched in the face?

No. We don’t hit each other, so there is no need to be concerned about being punched or kicked when you start Kempo Karate.

How do you know your techniques work if you don’t hit each other?

We learn and train intensively to punch and kick very hard. Punching an opponent’s face is the most basic counterattack of self-defence. A portion of the syllabus involves ensuring you can break concrete roof tiles. We also spend plenty of time punching bags. Learning these techniques helps us to understand the effect our strikes will have.

Through breaking and punching bag work, we ensure we are confident our techniques will work when applied, and as a bonus, we don’t need to knock each other about to prove it.

How long does it take to get a black belt in Kempo Karate?

There are 10 Belts between no experience and Black Belt (Black is the tenth), and each might be achieved with around six months of training. The first couple of belts are a little quicker. So much change has occurred since Karate broke out from its invitation-only halls around 1915. You will find other schools and art forms suggest much shorter times.

The Black Belt represents a significant milestone and indicates a respectable skill level. Kempo Karate adheres to the traditional pathway for a student (traditional in Japan/Okinawa rather than China).

What type of martial arts is best for me?

Naturally, every school and master would like to imply that their art form is the best for one reason or another, and often, instructors would like to suggest that it all comes down to the instructors themselves. In Kempo, we disagree; art is what students develop in themselves, and the instructor is just one in a long chain stretching back hundreds of years. A student’s progress, improvement, and effective skills come from their hard work in the techniques of the art form.

The best way to judge a martial arts club is to contact them and ask many questions. Martial arts teachers love talking about their art form and are enthusiastic about answering questions. They want students to know what they are about before they turn up for intro classes!
